Lakers Point Guard Steve Nash Takes Unusual Stand in Child Custody Dispute

By Nottage and Ward on December 19, 2012

Common issues that arise in child custody battles typically involve one parent wanting more visitation, one parent wanting full custody, or one parent fighting for more, or less, child support. The Huffington Post and TMZ report a different kind of custody dispute for Los Angeles Laker Steve Nash and his ex-wife, Alejandra Amarilla, however. Steve Nash is taking legal measures to prevent his ex-wife from moving to California with his children.

Steve Nash, who used to play for the Phoenix Suns, announced his divorce after five years of marriage in November 2010, one day after the birth of their third child. He filed one month later, asking the court to honor the terms of a premarital agreement that stated that Amarilla would not receive permanent spousal support from him. When Nash was traded to the Lakers, his agent remarked that it was a good move because Nash was able to stay relatively close to his kids. This remark is why the current custody dispute comes as a surprise.

Amarilla wants to move to Los Angeles from Arizona with her and Nash’s three children, a move that Nash is against and is trying to legally prevent. Amarilla has hired one of the most prominent divorce lawyers in L.A. to represent her interests. While the reason for Nash’s adamant objection to his family moving to Los Angeles is unknown, it may be related to child support. Apparently, Nash would be required to pay much more in child support in California than Arizona. As experienced child custody attorneys in Chicago, we have seen many disputes involving the issue of money; it is, in fact, a point of contention in various aspects of a divorce.
