April is Stress Awareness Month: Tips to Help During Your Divorce

By Leslie Fineberg on April 17, 2013

Divorce is an extremely stressful and emotionally trying process.  When children are involved, the battle between spouses can become even more contentious.  Financial considerations, negotiations, and litigation only add to the stress of going through a divorce.

We are all unique, and each of us handles stress differently.  Courtesy of my.chicagotribune.com, stress can manifest itself in the following ways:

  • We may feel exhaustion—a feeling of being “burnt out.”
  • We lack the motivation to perform ordinary responsibilities at home and at work.
  • We may have a noticeable drop in job performance and an increase in the time it takes to do our jobs.
  • We may adopt the habit of being cynical.
  • We may become antisocial.

April has been designated Stress Awareness Month.  The following advice may help you handle stress more effectively:

  • Find a non-work activity that provides a challenge.  Examples include volunteering, so your thoughts are not just on yourself and your problems, participating in sports, where the focus becomes the competition, or setting a fitness goal at a club or on your own.
  • Dedicate time for your own relaxation, whether it is hanging out with your friends, sharing meals and laughter, or simply listening to music or getting lost in a good book.
  • Turn off technology.  Designate times in the day to stop checking e-mail, messages, and voicemail.
  • Lack of sleep increases sensitivity to stressful events, like a divorce.  You need a minimum of six hours of sleep
  • Become organized to save time and worry.
  • Find a medical professional to speak with if you feel continually depressed.

At the Chicago family law firm of Nottage and Ward, our attorneys have seen it all and can anticipate moves before they are made.  Nottage and Ward believe that the best divorce lawyers practice family law and nothing else.  For 25 years our firm has excelled in negotiation and litigation of family law matters.  Call us at (312) 332-2915 if you have legal questions surrounding an impending divorce.

Leslie has been the strongest representation I could ask for in a very complicated, emotional matter. She has continuously looked out for my best interest and the best interest of my son. She is always prompt in getting back to me and in keeping me well informed about my case.
