Illinois GOP Chairman under Fire for Support of Same-Sex Marriages

By Jeffrey Knipmeyer on March 21, 2013

Illinois republican chairman Pat Brady has been under recent attack because of his endorsement of the same-sex marriage bill. In a National Organization for Marriage (an organization in opposition of same-sex marriages) campaign, hundreds of form-letter e-mails have been sent to and received by the Illinois Republican State Central Committee. The letters all call for Pat Brady’s ouster as state chairman of the Illinois Republican Party.

According to The Chicago Tribune, party leaders met behind closed doors on Saturday, March 9, 2013, to discuss Brady’s fate. According to the report it remains unclear whether committee members will reach a consensus.

In January, Brady, who has been chairman of the Illinois Republican Party for nearly four years, spoke out in support of a bill to legalize same-sex marriages in the state. The bill has passed the state Senate and is currently facing a close vote in the House. Conservative state senator Jim Oberweis has been spearheading the effort to remove Brady as the head of the party, comparing what Brady did to the actions of a corporate CEO who had gone off on a tangent contrary to company objectives.

Brady has said that his endorsement of same-sex marriages is based on his own personal beliefs. His stance on the issue was not made in the role of state Republican Party chairman. Since he made his stance known, Brady has been under attack by conservative Republicans who are critical of him for not sticking to the Republican plank stating that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

For over 20 years, our attorneys at the Chicago family law firm of Nottage and Ward have offered legal advice to all couples—no matter their living arrangement and praise chairman Brady for staying true to his beliefs and standing up for the rights of same-sex couples.

Leslie has been the strongest representation I could ask for in a very complicated, emotional matter. She has continuously looked out for my best interest and the best interest of my son. She is always prompt in getting back to me and in keeping me well informed about my case.
