Four Tips for Divorce Self-Care During the Holidays

By Nottage and Ward on September 2, 2015

Divorce is never easy. If you’re facing your first set of fall and winter holidays while separated, working through a divorce, or as a newly-divorced Chicagoan, you may feel anxious, depressed, or simply numb – as if you have no desire to celebrate at all.

Taking care of yourself during the holidays takes extra work and commitment, but it pays off.  You’ll be able to start building new traditions and reassuring your children that the holidays will still be magical for them. You’ll also be able to manage your divorce in a way that allows you and your experienced Chicago divorce lawyer to work efficiently around holiday schedules.  Here are four ways to improve your holidays:

1. Plan ahead. Plan to do something fun, relaxing, and stress-free during your holiday vacation time. Include the people who love and support you the most.

2. Make a schedule. Make a list of everything you need to do to carry out your holiday plans, and then set target completion dates. Your schedule will help you de-stress and stay on track.

3. Keep traditions or make new ones. Some family traditions can stay the same, while others will have to change due to new residences, new schedules, or new plans. Talk with your kids about adding one new family tradition this year, and get their input – what do they want to do?

4. Maintain your healthy routines. Make sure you are getting adequate food, exercise, and sleep during the holiday season. If you’re seeing a therapist or other health care professional, keep your appointments. Make time for rest and relaxation. Consider treating yourself to some pampering, like a massage or tickets to a show or event you’ve always wanted to attend.

If you need to speak with a Chicago divorce lawyer, don’t hesitate to call Nottage and Ward, LLP at (312) 332-2915.

Five Stars5 Leslie has been the strongest representation I could ask for

Leslie has been the strongest representation I could ask for in a very complicated, emotional matter. She has continuously looked out for my best interest and the best interest of my son. She is always prompt in getting back to me and in keeping me well informed about my case.
