Frank and Jamie McCourt May Be Headed to Resolution Regarding Dodgers Ownership

By Nottage and Ward on April 8, 2011

The Los Angeles Times reports that Frank and Jamie McCourt are working quietly to settle their high-profile divorce, which has grabbed national headlines. The infamous case involves ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

According to the article, a court hearing scheduled for April 11 was delayed to May 11 at the request of Jamie McCourt, who asked that Frank be ordered by the court to provide her with financial documentation of the business operations of the Dodgers. However, the adjustment also grants both parties more time to concentrate on negotiating an agreement to end their contentious divorce, which began in late 2009 after almost 30 years of marriage.

In December of last year, a Superior Court judge ruled that the post-nuptial agreement signed in 2004 between the McCourts, which granted Frank McCourt sole ownership of the Dodgers, was not valid. This ruling meant that, under California’s community property laws, the professional baseball team could potentially be shared. At the time, lawyers for Frank McCourt stated he would move towards a second trial to ascertain the team as his separate property, while attorneys for Jamie McCourt alleged she would create an investment group and offer to buy out Frank McCourt’s interest in the team. However, neither party has taken any action on either of these statements. On March 2, 2011, the McCourts met to renew settlement talks, but both sides have declined to comment.

At this time, it isn’t clear how the McCourts may settle their divorce, although Frank McCourt has continued to maintain he will remain the sole owner of the Dodgers regardless of the resolution of the case. During previous rounds of settlement talks, Jamie McCourt agreed to defer ownership of the team to her ex-husband in exchange for a payout; however, she rejected each of the settlement offers that were made to her.

In addition to the stress of the divorce, a high-profile divorce also subjects those involved to public scrutiny, which makes the assistance of a skilled Illinois divorce attorney all the more important.
