Sex and the City Author Candace Bushnell Files for Divorce from Dancer Charles Askegard

By Nottage and Ward on December 12, 2011

The question of whether life imitates art has been on everyone’s minds as Candace Bushnell, creator of Sex and the City, and her New York City Ballet dancer husband, Charles Askegard, call it quits after nine years of marriage. According to The New York Post, the independent author behind Sex and the City protagonist Carrie Bradshaw filed for divorce on December 2, months after her husband’s decision to leave the New York City Ballet to form his own dance company.

A friend close to couple told the New York Post that the divorce was a long-time coming as the pair had been living increasingly separate lives. Bushnell spent most of her time at her country house in Connecticut while Askegard spent almost all of his time in the city pursuing his career, which she fully supported. It is a sad and painful time for both Bushnell and Askegard, but both also acknowledge that they have been growing apart.

Bushnell and Askegard, who is 10 years younger than her, were married in 2002 amidst reactions of shock and surprise considering Bushnell, described as a social butterfly, had less than positive opinions of her first engagement, which she compared to drowning. The two remain friends and are working through the divorce as best they can.

Going through a divorce is a stressful and emotional time, especially for couples who find they are regularly in the public eye. Even if the split is amicable, constant media attention can take its toll on the relationship. Leslie has been the strongest representation I could ask for in a very complicated, emotional matter. She has continuously looked out for my best interest and the best interest of my son. She is always prompt in getting back to me and in keeping me well informed about my case.
