Several Fox Valley Mayors Urge State Legislators to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

According to a report by Chicago Tribune, a letter, composed by Geneva’s mayor and backed by Illinois Unites for Marriage, was recently endorsed by several other mayors in the Fox Valley area. These mayors were from St. Charles, Plano, Sleepy Hollow, North Aurora, Elburn, and Yorkville.

The Religious Freedom and Marriage Equality Fairness Act, a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois if passed, will soon be considered by the Illinois House of Representatives. The letter demands a passing vote.

“As the chief executive officers (of) our respective communities, our responsibility and guiding principal is to work with citizens and businesses to encourage, create, strengthen, and sustain an environment where everyone is provided an opportunity to succeed,” the letter states. “Each day, we see same-sex couples and their families who suffer because they are denied the full protections of law, protections that strengthen families.”

One mayor who signed the bill believes that marriage equality is essential to the good of the state’s citizens and economy. He said that when he was approached by Geneva’s mayor about the bill, he quickly and easily decided to provide his signature and support.

If the bill is passed, Illinois would join 14 other states that give marriage rights to same-sex couples.
